I hope this finds you well and finding ways to stay cool in these "dog days of summer". It has been a busy summer around Lowrie, and we are all excited to welcome children and families back very soon! I cannot wait until the beautiful voices of children fill the halls again. We have great plans and thinking for the year and we are all eager to get started again soon!
We have had some changes this summer, and we have had to say good-bye to a few that have left for other opportunities. For each person, the decision to leave was not an easy one, but whether the chance to be closer to home, closer to daycare for a child or a leadership position, the opportunities that came along were too good for them to pass-up. I know you join with me in wishing them all the best in their new adventures!
Patrick Sweeney and Priscilla Kelly will be moving to Bolton Primary. Karena Marcum and Nancy Fulcher will be moving to Willamette Primary. Lindsey Corey will be moving back to Idaho. Myrna Salinas will be moving to a literacy coaching position in Portland Public Schools. Emily Townsend will be moving to another district to continue her fine work as a counselor. Finally, Michelle Wilson is moving to CedarOak Primary to be their Instructional Coordinator.
While it was hard to say good-bye to these wonderful folks, it has created the opportunity to hire remarkable teachers to join the Lowrie family. I am really excited for you all to meet these new additions to our wonderful community. They bring such tremendous instructional strengths and deep commitments to the success of every child every day. They are outstanding!
Carmen Ryan will be our new counselor. She has spent that last 10 years working as a counselor in the Lebanon school district. She is thoughtful, brings a deep passion for helping children be successful in their classrooms and a depth of knowledge that will be wonderful addition to our school.
Kristen Verderame will be joining us to teach 3rd grade. Kristen comes with 5 years of teaching experience; four years teaching 5th grade in California and one year for doing a long term sub position at Boones Ferry last year. She too brings a strong depth of understanding about children and their learning. These understandings will help us to move our belief in every child every day forward.
Elisa Garcia will be joining us to teach the 3rd grade dual language classroom. Elisa comes to us with eight years of experience teaching dual language in Salem public schools. She also taught high school in her home country of Mexico. Elisa has a beautiful vision for, and a belief in, children and all they can accomplish each and every day.
Alesia Valdez will be joining us to teach the 4th grade dual classroom. Alesia comes with a many different teaching experiences. From International Baculaurate schools in Germany, to working in the Boston Public Schools, to teaching in dual language classrooms in Canby and PPS, Alesia brings incredible experience and expertise to not just dual language, but to our entire school community.
Michelle Warner will be joining us to teach 4th grade. Michelle started as an instructional assistant 11 years ago at Boones Ferry. Since then, she has taught in Korea, in head start classrooms and most recently in Virginia at 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades. Michelle not only brings a deep understanding of children and learning, she also has a wonderful artistic side as well.
Stacey Dolezal will be joining us to teach 4th grade. Stacey has taught for a number of years in the upper grades in California. She has also spent time as a tenured education professor at the University of Montana. Most recently she has worked at an elementary school in Tigard-Tualatin. Stacey brings a both a strong theoretical and practical base of understanding about teaching and learning, along with great relationships with children that will further enhance our collective work.
Grant Lemke will be joining us from Trillium Creek to teach 5th grade. Grant has taught at Boeckman Creek and Trillium at both the 4thand 5th grade levels for a number of years. He is a thoughtful teacher who will continue to help us grow and learn together.
Crystal Parman will be joining us to teach 5th grade. Crystal has taught for the last three years in Salem at 5th grade. She has been working closely with the Teacher's Development Group in the area of mathematics and will bring this learning and thinking to our focus on mathematics this year.
Heather Powers will be joining us to fill Priscilla Kelly's position. Heather comes to us from North Marion, where she has worked for a number of years within special education in a variety of roles. She brings a great deal of experience and passion for helping all children to succeed and thrive.
In terms of other movement, Adriana Aivazis will be teaching 4thgrade this year, Jackie Fuller and Clay Slocum will be teaching 5thgrade, and Laura Flach will teaching 1st grade. All the other teachers will be at the grade they taught last year. At this point our numbers are looking good. While there may be the need to create a K/1 blend to help with class size, at this point we are all set for the coming year.
